They say:
The First and Only One. In 1901, Maxim Ale was first introduced to the North East.
Following an crease in strenght in 1938, it became known as Double Maxim. This premium quality ale is still famous among discerning drinkers for its well rounded flavour.
We say:
A weaker, slightly less good, version of Maximus by the same brewer.

Teak beer, with a harsh hoppy 'beer' smell. Taste much as expected from aroma, if slightly weaker, after surprisingly sweet. Not surprisingly, like a weaker, not quite as good, version of Maximus from same brewery.

Deep chestnut. OK off white head on pour, with very good retention and some solid lacing. Old school ‘Beer’ malt aroma. What I used to think of, when I thought ‘Beer’. Bitter hop and malt, I guess. Silky with some sharp effervescence. Saw this in the shop for the first time in a while, and bought more or less for nostalgia. Looking back, I’m broadly in agreement with my younger self in description, just a bit harsher with my scoring now.
